The Ned Kelly Experience

Levels 5 and up

We’ve all heard his name before, now students are given the chance to walk in Ned’s footsteps. This program brings the story of the famed bushranger to life! Students will reenact the court trial that saw Ned sent to the gallows at the Former Magistrates Court of Melbourne, dressing up and playing the roles of infamous Judge Redmond Barry, lawyers, police witnesses and Ned himself. Following the trial, students will take a walk around the Old Melbourne Gaol, learning of Ned’s last stand at Glenrowan, his time spent at the Gaol and what happened to his body after his death (you might get to try on a suit of armour)! This experience is one not to be missed!

Program:

1-hour Court Room Drama. 

15-minute break 

45-minute exploration of the Old Melbourne Gaol 

This program aligns with the Levels 5 & 6 History, Civics and Citizenship and Drama curriculum.

History Unwrapped: Christmas at Como

Foundation and up

Join us at Como House in November and December for some festive cheer! Travel back in time to see how colonial families celebrated Christmas in the late 1800s, explore the beautiful house decked to the nines with Yuletide decorations. Discover Christmas presents from days past, including some incredible toys and games. Create a traditional Christmas decoration to take home. Then, head out to the croquet lawn for some old-fashioned games in the sun. We encourage visitors to dress up 1800s-style for this fantastic day out!

Program: 

1-hour house tour and handicrafts 

15-minute break 

45-minute Old-fashioned games on the croquet lawn. 

This program aligns with the then and now History unit for lower primary students.

Ahoy Sailors!

Levels 2 and up

Step lively aboard Polly Woodside for a day of sailing, scrubbing and scallywagging on Melbourne’s real Tall Ship! Join our first mate to learn the ropes of life the high seas, try your hand at some sailor work, try out our rope swing and explore the cabinsWARNING, pirates may be afoot… Be prepared to receive your own pirate name and tattoo – best ye be warned, you may have to walk the plank! 

This program links with History and Design and Technologies.

Introduction to the History of Crime and Punishment

Suitable for incoming Legal Studies students

As the end of the year approaches, and students are readying themselves for VCE Legal Studies, there’s no better way to introduce them than with a trip to Pentridge Prison. Here students will take a tour with a trained educator to learn about life inside Victoria’s most infamous prison. Students will discover the stories from those who were there, including former prisoners, lawyers, chaplains and guards, through a state-of-the-art audio-visual experience. Tours of both B Division and the notorious H Division are available with detailed teacher resource packs available on booking. This program aligns strongly with the new 2024 Legal Studies Study Design, with themes of crime and punishment at the forefront of the tour.
