The Geelong & Region Branch will hold two events celebrating the remarkable life and career of the inventor of refrigeration, Scottish-born James Harrison. These events will explore the many contributions to Geelong made by this unpredictable ‘pioneering genius’.

James Harrison: Inventor – Editor – Entrepreneur
James Harrison’s fascinating story includes his professional life as the founding editor of the Geelong Advertiser in 1840 (he owned it 1842 – 61) and his journeys to England pursuing the development of his refrigeration inventions. He was also a Town Councillor, politician, philanthropist and advocate for Geelong. Local admirers will take you on some of Harrison’s life journey.
When: Friday 19 March, 7 pm (timed so that Harrison’s Scottish compatriots can view the event).

Exhibition
James Harrison’s Momentous Achievements – machines, medals, memorabilia
The exhibition will feature a timeline of Harrison’s life, memorabilia from his printing and journalism career, and patents and models of refrigeration machinery invented by this untrained draughtsman, engineer and visionary.
The exhibition will be subject to COVID-19 restrictions at the direction of the Department of Health and Human Services Victoria.
