A family favourite celebrating the National Trust’s 70th Anniversary

At this time of year, Rippon Lea Estate comes alive with vivid colour as its celebrated dahlia collection bursts into bloom. This seasonal display transforms into a living canvas of bold colour, texture and form — making it a must-see moment in the gardening calendar.

Cared for year-round by the National Trust’s dedicated Garden Team — led by the Head Gardener and supported by skilled staff and volunteers — the dahlias are a highlight of the Estate, along with the historic Flower and Picking Garden, which is also in bloom and where visitors can enjoy flowers traditionally grown for indoor arrangements, just as they would have been in Victorian times.

A flower with a rich history

The dahlia, the national flower of Mexico, has a history stretching back to the Aztec Empire. Originally cultivated for its starchy tubers, the plant later travelled to Europe in the 18th century, where it was celebrated for its extraordinary ornamental beauty.

Today, dahlias are renowned for their diversity. From delicate star-shaped blooms to intricate spherical forms and waterlily-like flowers, they appear in shades of white, yellow, orange, red and deep purple — each variety offering something different to discover.
