MEDIA RELEASE: Federation Square added to Victorian Heritage Register

National Trust responds to inclusion of Federation Square in the Victorian Heritage Register

Quotes attributable to Simon Ambrose, Chief Executive Officer, National Trust of Australia (Victoria)

The National Trust welcomes today’s news that Federation Square has officially been included in the Victorian Heritage Register, along with our state’s most valued places.

This comes after a year-long process following the National Trust’s nomination of Federation Square to the Victorian Heritage Register.

The inclusion in the Victorian Heritage Register will not prevent appropriate future change and development at Federation Square. However any future changes will need to consider its architectural, social and historic values, and go through a process of public consultation.

As a direct result of the National Trust’s work to recognise what makes Federation Square our state’s premier public space, the State Government has announced a major review to inform its future.

Federation Square belongs in the hands of Victorians, and the National Trust’s vision is that it thrives as our state’s premier civic and cultural space.

We encourage all Victorians to have a say in the future of Federation Square by participating in the review at https://engage.vic.gov.au/federation-square-review.
