Join National Trust Volunteer, Irene Kearsey at Tasma Terrace as she discusses John Arthur, Melbourne’s first botanical gardener.
John Arthur was born in Dunkeld, Scotland, and arrived in Melbourne on October 31, 1839, aboard the David Clark. In February 1846, after La Trobe selected the site for the Botanic Gardens, Arthur was appointed as its first director. As the Gardens’ first director, he planted the lagoon walk and skillfully integrated indigenous plants into the landscape.
Irene is deeply interested in many aspects of Victoria’s history and has worked extensively as a volunteer with Public Records Office Victoria (PROV) archives.
As a member of the La Trobe Society, she has participated in the PROV project of indexing the Inward Correspondence to La Trobe, 1839-1851.
She has also carried out research for the National Trust on topics relating to public art to be registered.
This event is offered exclusively for National Trust of Australia (Victoria) Members. Spaces are limited and bookings are essential.
