As the sun sets and lanterns flicker to life, journey through the historic homestead on an atmospheric guided tour exploring the folklore, omens and household rituals that once influenced everyday life. Discover why mirrors were covered, horseshoes hung above doorways, salt scattered for protection and certain birds were feared as messengers of misfortune.
Wander through candlelit rooms, shadowy corridors and quiet garden paths as stories of luck, curses, death omens and mysterious remedies bring the past to life. Along the way, you’ll uncover the fascinating origins of superstitions that many of us still follow today, often without knowing why.
This immersive after-dark experience includes interactive moments throughout the tour, with visitors invited to carry lanterns, take part in traditional protective rituals and explore rarely discussed aspects of nineteenth-century home life. Atmospheric, mysterious and occasionally spine-tingling, the evening offers a unique alternative to traditional ghost tours, blending authentic history with the darker side of Victorian culture.
Following the tour, relax in the Burrell Twycross Gallery with tea, coffee and shortbread while reflecting on the stories you’ve heard. Guests will also receive a small keepsake herb bundle inspired by traditional beliefs and protective customs of the era.

Each session runs for approximately 1 hour, followed by tea, coffee and shortbread.
Part of the tour takes place outside and through the garden, so visitors should dress for the evening weather and wear suitable footwear.
Onsite parking is limited and is expected to fill quickly. Ample street parking is available along Beverley Road and Burrell Street. Accessibility is limited in some parts of the tour. The route moves through the historic homestead, garden paths and several small interior spaces. There are also a couple of steps and quite a high verge leading into the kitchen.
