Deed of Settlement of 900 pounds for the children of Sergeant Kennedy and Constable Lonigan, killed in the battle with the Kelly Gang, Stringybark Creek, 26 October 1878.
This Deed for £900 is dated 23 July 1880 and was drawn up by the Crown Solicitor’s Office
…for the benefit of the children of Sergeant Kennedy and Constable Lonigan murdered by the Kelly Gang for investment by the Kelly Gang for investment by trustees to be appointed by the Government until the children shall respectively attain the age of twenty-one years
Sergeant Kennedy and Constable Lonigan were shot by the notorious Kelly Gang at Stringybark Creek near Mansfield in 1879. Sergeant Kennedy led a group of three policemen into the area to find and arrest the gang. They were ambushed and all were killed. A year later, Edward (Ned) Kelly and his gang were captured, or killed by police at Glenrowan. Ned was injured, but survived to hang at Old Melbourne Gaol on the 11 November 1880.
