Nocturnal Creatures: Citizen Science Event

6 Mar 2026

6:00 pm ‐ 9:00 pm

Free event – registration required to manage capacity

Maximum capacity: 40 people

Take part in this rare opportunity to learn more about the nocturnal creatures that call Rippon Lea Estate’s heritage gardens home.

As the skies darken, join local citizen scientist Robert Schiller and entomologist Daniel Kurek to discover the biodiversity of Rippon Lea. Using a bat detector and a specialised light sheet, you’ll uncover the hidden world of microbats and nocturnal insects.

Learn how to identify local species, and use the iNaturalist app to record your findings. Port Phillip EcoCentre will also have resources available to support and encourage biodiversity in home gardens.

Bring a picnic to enjoy on the lawn at sunset, while children can learn more about the environment through Nature Bingo. Gates open from 6.00pm, with citizen science activities commencing at 7.30pm.

This is an opportunity to connect with nature, contribute to citizen science, and experience Rippon Lea’s biodiversity in a new light. Rippon Lea Estate is recognised as a biodiversity hotspot within Glen Eira, offering an urban refuge for wildlife and a space for people to connect with and benefit from natural green environments.

Bring a picnic rug if you wish, and a torch for safe navigation when leaving (not required for the event itself). Closed-toe footwear is recommended, and guests are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather, as this is an outdoor event.

Nocturnal Creatures: Citizen Science Event is proudly supported by the City of Glen Eira.
