Join us for a joyful day of family fun as the Teddy Bears Picnic returns to Rippon Lea Estate. Pack your picnic, round up the kids and grandkids, and bring along your favourite teddy or soft toy for this much-loved community event. 

Held across the sweeping lawns and lush gardens of Rippon Lea, the day is filled with activities, creativity, and entertainment suitable for all ages.

  • Live reading of Elm & Willow’s Adventures at Rippon Lea: Teddy Bears’ Picnic

  • Tea Room: Please note that the Tea Rooms are open for takeaway hot and cold drinks, ice cream, and biscuits. Sandwiches and cakes will be on offer when available. Takeaway drinks and food can be enjoyed on the main mansion veranda where tables and chairs will be provided to soak up the beautiful views of the garden.
  • The Gatehouse Gift Shop: There is a lovely selection of gifts and homewares to suit everyone’s taste.
  • The Gatehouse Nursery: Here you will find a wonderful variety of plants for sale.

Do I need to bring food, or can I buy food on-site?

You’re welcome to bring your own picnic, rug, and reusable water bottles (water taps are available).

Food will also be available to purchase, including a sausage sizzle, coffee cart, and food trucks offering family-friendly options. 

Can I use my Council Membership or Garden Entry Card for entry?

This is a special ticketed event. Glen Eira and Port Phillip residents with a Garden Entry Card will need to purchase event tickets at general admission prices. 

Is Rippon Lea Estate wheelchair and pram friendly?

Most of the gardens are pram friendly, though paths are gravel and may be challenging for some wheelchair users. 

  • The ground floor of the mansion is wheelchair accessible.
  • An iPad with photographs of the upper floor is available for those unable to access stairs—please speak with staff for assistance. 
What happens if the event is cancelled due to weather?

You can book with confidence. If the event is cancelled due to weather, ticket holders will be contacted and offered either: 

  • A full refund, or
  • An exchange for a National Trust Gift Card to use for another experience. 
Can I bring my dog?

Only accredited assistance animals are permitted on-site. 

How do I book tickets?

Tickets must be purchased online. You can book through the link provided on our website.

Unfortunately, we cannot take bookings by phone or email. 

Can I buy tickets on the day?

Yes. Tickets can be purchased at the gate, but we strongly recommend booking in advance for faster entry and to secure the best price. 

Will there be toilets and baby change facilities?

Yes. Toilets are located near the stables complex at the eastern end of the property.

A baby change table is available in the ambulant cubicle. 

What ages is the event suitable for?

This is a family-friendly day suitable for all ages, especially children aged 5–11 years. Grandparents and carers will also enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and garden activities. 

Is there parking available?

There is no on-site parking. Surrounding streets have parking restrictions.

We strongly recommend using public transport to get to the event. 

How do I get there by public transport?

Train: Rippon Lea Station (Sandringham Line) is a five-minute walk from the estate.

Tram: Route 67 (to Carnegie), stop 42.

Bus: Routes 216 or 219 from Queen Street in Melbourne CBD. Ask the driver for the first stop after Glen Eira Road. 

What should I bring?

For a comfortable day, we recommend bringing: 

  • Picnic food, rug, and water bottles
  • Hats, sunscreen, and weather-appropriate clothing
  •  Your favourite teddy bear or soft toy
  • A small pram or stroller for little legs
  • Cashless payment for food trucks and fairground rides 
Are there shaded areas on the grounds?

Rippon Lea offers some natural shade from trees, but it can be limited. Consider bringing a small shade umbrella or pop-up picnic shade. 

Will the event proceed if it is very hot?

If extreme heat conditions are forecast, we will update ticket holders with any changes. Safety is our priority, and we may adjust programming or provide additional shade and water points. 

Can I explore the mansion during the event?

General admission for this event includes access to the gardens and outdoor activities. Mansion access may be limited on the day.
