Delivered by the National Trust’s Education Team, our school holiday excursions offer Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) providers enriching experiences that combine learning with genuine enjoyment.

Designed to support structured holiday programming, each excursion provides a safe and engaging environment where children can explore Victoria’s heritage in memorable ways.

Children of all ages can take part in facilitated programs at some of Melbourne and Victoria’s most treasured heritage places, including the Old Melbourne Gaol, Polly Woodside Tall Ship, Rippon Lea Estate, Como House and Garden, McCrae Homestead, Barwon Grange and Gulf Station Historic Farm.

Every program is designed to encourage participation through fun, hands-on activities — proving that history can be dynamic, surprising, and deeply engaging.

Excursions can typically accommodate groups of 15 to 80 students (minimum numbers and charges apply depending on the program), making them suitable for both small and large groups.

Old Melbourne Gaol

Melbourne CBD

Duration: 2 hours

Program includes:

  • Life in the City Watch House: In this interactive experience, an actor playing a sergeant will ‘arrest’ and process visitors at the Old City Watch House.
  • Inmate Intel: Step back in time to discover what life was like in Melbourne long ago. Explore the grounds around the historic gaol and part of the cell block.

Rippon Lea Estate

Elsternwick, Melbourne

Duration: 2.5 hours

Programs include:

  • Rippon Lea Ramble: Inspired by the famed teddy bears of Rippon Lea, Elm and Willow, be guided on an enchanting journey through the historic grounds.
  • Mansion Time Machine: The Sargoods lived in the mansion and had servants to look after them. Explore the mansion and discover how people lived and worked in the 1800s.
  • Old-Fashioned Games: Play games like children did when Rippon Lea was built in the 1800s — sack races, egg and spoon races, croquet, quoits and more.

Morning and afternoon sessions available.

Como House & Garden

South Yarra, Melbourne

Duration: 2.5 hours

Program includes:

  • Archaeological Dig: Roll up your sleeves, put on some gloves, and learn how to think and work like an archaeologist.
  • The Old House on the Hill: The Armytage family lived at Como House for nearly 100 years. Explore their lives and those of their servants on a guided tour through the Victorian-era house.
  • Garden Scavenger Hunt: Explore the extensive gardens just as the Armytage children did long ago.

Polly Woodside

South Wharf, Melbourne

Duration: 2 hours

Program options:

  • Ahoy Sailors! Join our crew on the ‘high seas’. Try your hand at steering, scrubbing the deck, ringing the bell and working the yardarm.
  • Pirate Day! Experience the pirate life — dress up, receive a washable pirate tattoo and your very own pirate name. Help the captain scrub the deck and set off on a treasure hunt.

Sessions: 10.00am–12.00pm and 12.30pm–2.30pm
Minimum charge: 20 children per session (Ahoy Sailors!) / 30 children per session (Pirate Day)
Maximum capacity: 80 children per session

Barwon Grange

Newtown, Geelong

Duration: 2.5 hours

Program includes:

  • Archaeological Dig: Roll up your sleeves, put on some gloves, and let our Dig Director show you how to think and work like an archaeologist.
  • Back to Barwon Grange: Discover how people in Geelong lived in the 1800s, including toys, entertainment, technologies and the lives of children when Barwon Grange was built.
  • Old-Fashioned Games: Enjoy games from the 1800s — sack races, egg and spoon races, skittles, croquet, quoits and more.

McCrae Homestead

McCrae, Mornington Peninsula

Duration: 4 hours (10.00am–2.00pm)

Program includes:

  • Homestead Time Machine: Learn about the McCrae family and their relationship with the Bunurong peoples, and hear how people lived and worked in the 1800s.
  • Bunurong Garden Discovery Trail & Craft: Traverse the gardens on a special discovery trail to see what animals have been visiting, followed by a craft activity.
  • Old-Fashioned Games: Play games like children did in the 1800s — sack races, egg and spoon races, skittles, quoits and more.

Maximum capacity: Strictly 60 children per day

Gulf Station

Yarra Glen, Yarra Valley

Duration: 4 hours

Program includes:

  • Gulf Station is one of the oldest and most intact examples of a pioneer farm complex in Australia.
  • Children will enjoy churning cream into butter, grinding wheat into flour, peeling and coring apples, feeding the Clydesdales and playing horseshoe quoits.

Availability: Thursdays only
