Bega's heritage landmark is now open to the public after an award-winning restoration.
The balance of when to retain and when to replace in conservation is not often easily answered. Yet when this complex question is thoughtfully considered, the results can be inspiring.
Such is the case with Old Bega Hospital, the winner of two awards, including the esteemed Judges’ Choice prize at the 2025 National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards.
Officially opened to the public on Friday 20 June, following a long-term restoration, the historic site’s stunning transformation is a triumphant example of heritage conservation against the odds.

First constructed in 1888, the heritage-listed building was extensively damaged by a fire in 2004, leaving only the brick walls and chimneys, along with remnants of the roof, floors, and joinery. Years of fundraising and advocacy by the Bega community followed. One creative member of the Friends of Old Bega Hospital rallied local residents to knit a new wool ‘roof’ to draw attention to the building’s plight.
In 2023 work to revive the regional landmark began. Guided by archival drawings and historic photographs, the intricate restoration was funded by government grants and carefully carried out by Design 5 – Architects, NSW Public Works and local contractor Leser Build. Elegantly rebuilt to its original specifications but with a new kitchen and upgraded facilities, Old Bega Hospital has cleverly retained its original form as well as its intention as a building for community use.

Throughout the building, thoughtfully preserved fire-damaged materials honour the past, and create a unique backdrop for the continuing use of this vibrant community hub.
In May, the National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards Judging panel described the project works as “sensitive, elegantly resolved and a project that sets the standard for heritage conservation.”
National Trust President and Awards jury member, Kathryn Pitkin attended the official opening of Old Bega Hospital and said “… this a superbly planned and executed project, bolstered by grants and strong public advocacy, that has completely revived the historic building.”
