The National Trust (NSW) welcomes the NSW Government’s recent decision to abandon the Central Precinct rezoning proposal.

The proposed project, which included plans to build across 45% of the state heritage listed site, would have forever altered Central Station – one of Sydney’s most important civic assets.
Since it was unveiled in August 2022, the National Trust strongly opposed the proposal and campaigned to preserve the heritage of Central Station. A detailed objection to the proposal was submitted, with the National Trust highlighting key concerns surrounding the significant impact of the planned development.
The proposal included enclosing outdoor platforms, restricting steam train access, erecting a series of buildings up to 200m in height, and obscuring the prominence of the iconic Central Clock Tower.
In addition to the submission opposing the development, the National Trust wrote to individuals and key organisations regarding the proposal and advocated for the heritage of Central Station through the media.
The National Trust is pleased by the government’s decision to withdraw the Central Precinct rezoning proposal and will continue to advocate for planning outcomes that benefit both the people of NSW and maintain the character of this State heritage-listed site.
