For 25 years, the dedicated advocacy of the Hawkesbury Branch of the National Trust (NSW) has both protected and celebrated the places that tell the story of this region and its people. Founded by Carol Edds in 2000, alongside her husband Graeme, the branch is a shining example of community-led heritage stewardship.
From Windsor’s civic spaces to timber slab barns, Georgian homes and even forgotten post offices, the members of the Hawkesbury Branch have been tireless advocates for local heritage, galvanising public awareness and action at critical times. They have held authorities accountable for unauthorised works at the Richmond Post Office and during the redevelopment the Windsor Bridge, alongside defending Thompson Square – one of the oldest public squares in Australia. The Branch has also provided critical support for heritage listings such as the Hawkesbury Agricultural College Pumping Station.
Through perseverance and passion, the Branch have protected not just buildings, but the character, identity and memory of the Hawkesbury for future generations. They have also brought heritage to life with creativity and zeal, hosting everything from symposiums to public talks, walking tours and film screenings over the past quarter century.
This inspiring legacy was recently celebrated on a perfect spring day, when guests gathered to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Hawkesbury Branch. Joining the celebrations were long-standing former Chair, Carol Edds, Federal Member for Macquarie, Susan Templeman and Mayor of Hawkesbury City, Les Sheather. A heartfelt congratulatory speech was made by the President of the National Trust of Australia (NSW), Kathyrn Pitkin, highlighting the many achievements of the Branch. A joyous occasion, the afternoon was a celebration of community spirit and a reflection of the integral role of National Trust (NSW) branches in local advocacy.
