Call for Victoria Barracks to continue in Defence ownership

The National Trust (NSW) is advocating for the conservation of Australia’s historic defence sites.

The National Trust of Australia (NSW) is concerned about the recent announcement that several historic defence sites in NSW are set to be sold. We note that some of these places are listed as heritage sites, including Lancer Barracks which is the oldest continuously used military barracks on the mainland of Australia. The National Trust are particularly concerned that one of the most significant and untarnished examples of colonial architecture in Australia, Victoria Barracks, is among those suggested for disposal. The Victoria Barracks were listed by the National Trust in 1969 and we are advocating for Victoria Barracks to continue in Defence ownership. For more information read our position paper on the Victoria Barracks.

As this issue affects multiple states throughout Australia, we are currently working with the Australian Council of National Trusts to form a position in response to the places impacted throughout NSW, Victoria, Queensland and the ACT. The National Trust will continue to update members and the community as this issue develops.
