Under + Over is a collaborative exhibition and residency with Blue Mountains textile artists, Julie Paterson and Pippita Bennett.
Inspired by Sorensen’s gardens – a mixture of endemic natives and exotics, of wildness and consideration – and their own, Julie Paterson and Pippita Bennett’s work for Under + Over is layered and enriched through their collaboration.
Known for her plant-dyed and densely-stitched artworks, Pip works slowly and deliberately, while Julie is renowned for her printed textiles, designed with a process that’s fast and intuitive. The work Pip and Julie create together is a robust hybrid of their respective skills and sensibilities, and distinctive from their own individual work.
Together, Pip and Julie have spent many months in research, discussion and making, handing pieces of fabric back and forth to each other, dyeing, printing and stitching – responding to each other’s processes to create textile pieces built up and enriched with layering and detail. Each piece is a palimpsest of time and place, evocative of Blue Mountains gardens, somewhat tamed, somewhat wild.
Julie and Pip will be in residence together at Everglades House for three weeks, growing the exhibition as they create new work in situ in response to Sorensen’s surrounding gardens. Expect order bordering on chaos, colour, randomness and joy.
All works are for sale and proceeds support the work of the National Trust (NSW).
While you’re visiting, be sure to take a stroll through the stunning Paul Sorensen-designed gardens, enjoy sweeping views of the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, explore the Art Deco house and make time for a delicious Devonshire Tea in the Everglades House & Gardens tea rooms.
Exhibition is included in a valid General Entry ticket.
