View Sydney's first major exhibition of works by Mary Tonkin - one of Australia's leading en plein air landscape painters.
Mary Tonkin is one of Australia’s leading landscape painters whose epic, immersive paintings respond to the changing seasons, lights and viewpoints of the bush where she paints en plein air.
Based in a secluded corner of the dense damp, ferny bush of Corhanwarrabul/ Dandenong Ranges, Tonkin paints the landscape of her childhood – her ‘enchanted paradise’.
Tonkin’s mastery of the painted landscape creates extraordinarily detailed works which are a sensorial and visceral experience that engages the viewer and conveys her deeply felt emotions to the place that inspires her.
This major survey exhibition, the first in Sydney, will examine the artist’s oeuvre from the early 2000s to the present day in works saturated with light, colour and hope.
