Overview

The role is located at a National Trust property set on 200 acres of lush parklands near Sutton Forest in the Southern Highlands. This grand sandstone home surrounded by English-style gardens, features an extensive collection of furniture and art as well as outbuildings dating from the 19th century, including stables and a woolshed.
About the Role
The Gardener is responsible for general maintenance of the garden surrounding the homestead. This includes, but is not limited to, mowing, pruning, weeding, planting and general gardening duties, including green rubbish removal to ensure the overall presentation of the property.
They may also work with the General Manager Properties, South and designated garden volunteers in the lead up to an event at the property to ensure the property is well presented.
This is a permanent part-time position for 21 hours per week, which may include some weekend hours from time to time. The days of working may depend on property activities and a degree of flexibility is desirable.
About you
We’re looking for someone with a sunny and positive disposition who is physically fit and able to undertake a range of gardening tasks with little supervision.
While this role only maintains the garden around the Homestead, it will be busy, and you therefore need to be organised with a desire to achieve your goals and an ability to turn your hand to a number of practical tasks.
Technically you need:
- Relevant qualifications in a discipline related to gardening or horticulture, or extensive experience within these industries.
- Accredited herbicide users training (Chemical Certification AQF3) or willingness to be trained
- Mechanical aptitude and ability to use and maintain tools such as a chainsaw, mulcher, brush cutter, mowers and backpack sprayers and high pressure water cleaner.
- Physical fitness to perform a variety of heavy manual tasks
- Excellent time management skills and an ability to constantly re-prioritise tasks to ensure completion within required timeframes
- An understanding of the need to comply with WHS processes and procedures and a commitment to providing a safe working environment for all staff, volunteers and visitors who come onto the property.
- An understanding of and commitment to the National Trust’s aims, objectives and workplace values, and the principles of Equity & Diversity and WH&S.
- Current NSW Working with Children Check number (WWCC)
- Current First Aid Certificate (or willingness to gain)
- Class C driver’s license
You will be involved in the day-to-day business of maintaining a large English-style garden surrounding a historic house so can expect to be busy. There is a manual handling component to this role so whilst we welcome mature candidates, you must have a degree of fitness to be able to undertake your expected duties to the standard required.
