Experience the joy of spring in the Southern Highlands with family and friends at Golden Vale Homestead, a grand and historic sandstone home surrounded by charming English-style gardens.

Hosted in the height of spring in stunning surrounds, Golden Vale’s picnic day is a delightful way to spend a day with loved ones, picnic basket in hand.

Wander the grounds, lounge on the lush grass in the beautiful walled garden or shade yourself under the old oak trees grown from acorns taken from the Windsor Great Park in England.

Traditional acoustic music will provide the perfect backdrop for lawn games, or for those seeking to retreat to the meadows, a romantic carriage ride awaits.

Explore the 1870s homestead, rarely open public for viewing, and discover the historic shearing sheds on a guided tour.

Tea, coffee and baked goodies will be available for purchase on the day. Visitors can prebook a boxed lunch, pack a picnic or snag a sausage sandwich from the volunteer-run BBQ.

Getting there

We’re happy to advise that onsite parking at Golden Vale is now available for all guests.

Due to this increased parking capacity, shuttle buses from All Saints Anglican Church will no longer be running.

Note: Children to be supervised at all times. Dogs not permitted due to farm animals onsite.

About Golden Vale Homestead

Witness to almost 150 years of elegant living, Golden Vale Homestead is a magnificent c1870 property set on 200 acres of lush parkland near Sutton Forest, Gundungurra Country.

Golden Vale was home to many owners over the years. The land was first promised to free settler Michael Hogan, who sold Golden Vale to emancipated convict Thomas Wilmot in 1830 for 39 pounds. Edward Carter later purchased Golden Vale from Wilmot in 1857 and built the grand homestead to house his growing family.

Today, the homestead features an extensive collection of furniture and art, as well as outbuildings dating from the nineteenth century, including stables and woolshed.
