Solve Clues and Crack Mysteries at Old Melbourne Gaol & Pentridge Prison Tours
Turn your family day out into a hands-on detective adventure.
At Old Melbourne Gaol, kids can join Crime Busters: Forensic Investigators—a free activity with any ticket. They’ll uncover clues, test their observation skills, and solve a historical mystery.
While you’re there, explore the cells, learn about Australia’s most infamous criminals, or join a Gaol Tour or Ned Kelly Tour to dive deeper into stories of escape and legend.
Want even more thrills? Head to Pentridge Prison Tours and follow the Time Travellers Scavenger Hunt. This clue-filled journey is free with any PrisonBreak Explorers ticket.
For the best value, grab a Prison Explorers Pass. It gives you access to both the Old Melbourne Gaol and Pentridge Prison Tours.
All Aboard for Pirate Day at Polly Woodside
Set sail for fun with a visit to Polly Woodside.
On Pirate Day, kids can scrub the deck, swing on ropes, and hunt for treasure. Every child gets their own pirate name and a temporary tattoo to complete the transformation.
There’s also a reading corner, craft station, and time to explore the ship and museum.
Costumes are highly encouraged—Fashions on the Plank is your moment to shine. That goes for parents too.
The next Pirate Day takes place on Sunday, 21 September 2025, from 10am to 1pm. Book tickets here.
Imagination Comes to Life at Rippon Lea Estate
For something magical, head to Rippon Lea Estate.
Little ones can follow The Elm & Willow Adventure Trail. It’s a self-guided journey led by two mischievous bear best friends. Along the way, kids will encounter winding paths, a working windmill, playful ducks, and a beautiful lake.
The trail is designed to spark imagination and help children connect with nature and story. It’s just $5 with any general admission ticket and runs daily during the holidays.
Step Back in Time at Gulf Station Heritage Farm
Take a break from the modern world at Gulf Station.
This working heritage farm in the Yarra Valley shows what life was like in 19th-century Victoria. Walk through the homestead, old schoolhouse, and stables. Meet the resident Clydesdales and friendly sheep.
It’s a great spot for a spring picnic and a relaxed family day out.
Gulf Station is open on the First Thursday and Last Friday of every month, so time your visit and don’t miss out.
Make an Escape Countryside to Mooramong Estate
Swap screens for starry skies with a trip to Mooramong Estate, near Skipton.
Stay in one of the estate’s heritage cottages, where history meets modern comfort. By day, explore the gardens and walking trails. Try birdwatching from the hide or play a match on the tennis court. Or head out to the nearby Skipton-Ballarat Rail Trail.
As night falls, wrap up with hot chocolate, marshmallows, or a glass of local wine under the stars.
Mooramong is just 50 minutes from Ballarat. It’s the perfect base for a springtime road trip and is close to the Pyrenees Wine Region and the Grampians.
Bookings are available for the School Holidays and the AFL Grand Final Long Weekend.
