The Collie Roundhouse is a step closer to becoming a key community asset and potential tourism development with the letting of a contract to begin remediation of this important local landmark.
Collie builder Jila Riley, will be teaming up with McMahon’s Services to undertake the first stage of the environmental clean-up which will concentrate on the removal of asbestos from the Roundhouse and lead paint from the railway carriage. Urgent building conservation works will also be undertaken including replacing broken glass skylights, repairing the concrete roof, relining the timber stud framed wall, and clearing intrusive vegetation from around the building which has hidden it from view.
‘It will be a joy to see the Collie Roundhouse, a significant industrial heritage landmark on the western entry to town, once again,’ beamed local member Mick Murray. ‘I am thrilled a local building company is a key part of the team to undertake this work.’
Jila Riley is a Collie based business helping to build Collies’ future. Jeff and Leigh Riley have 34 years in building and project management and run the business. The team includes daughter Kacey in administration, their son Clint who is a carpenter, and their nephew an apprentice carpenter. Four other full-time staff also work in the family-owned and operated business. Jila Riley will undertake the carpentry, cladding, skylights, and roofing works. McMahon’s Services, who have a strong reputation in the hazardous materials and demolition industry having carried out several national and naval heritage projects, will undertake the specialised remediation work.
The vision to transform Collie Roundhouse, Western Australia’s last remaining insitu railway roundhouse, and only extant turntable, as a renewed tourist destination whilst maintaining its historical significance is clearly understood by the project team. This first stage of remediation works will commence in July and be completed by September.
A Visioning Workshop is planned for mid-August and it is anticipated a call for Expressions of Interest to lease the site will be released by the end of September.
