Local Collie Project Manager appointed to oversee conservation of Collie Roundhouse

Media Release

The National Trust of Western Australia has appointed Collie firm HRE Consulting to project manage the first stage of conservation works for the Collie Roundhouse. One of the last remaining railway roundhouses in the state, the Collie Roundhouse is located at the western entry to the town and represents a major opportunity for future tourism-related businesses.

The conservation works will be undertaken by the National Trust with a focus on contracting local businesses and trades.

Works will ensure the site meets public use standards and will restore the Roundhouse structure, ready for a new business operator to take on the site after lease arrangements are settled.

Funded by the State Government’s Collie Futures Industry Development Fund, the conservation of the Collie Roundhouse is closely aligned to the State Government’s commitment to enabling economic diversification in Collie.

Built in 1954, the Collie Roundhouse has significant heritage value. It was classified by the National Trust in 1988; included on the State Register of Heritage Places in 1992; and upgraded to a permanent entry on that register in 2018. National Trust CEO, Julian Donaldson said that the National Trust was delighted to see the appointment of HRE Consulting as it puts in place the first step in ensuring the Collie community has direct involvement in and benefits from the Roundhouse project.

It is anticipated that the current phase of works will be complete by early 2021 and that in the interim the National Trust hopes to settle on a lease arrangement to ensure the next phase in the development of the Roundhouse can immediately follow.
