Jewish Memorial Cemetery Rededication

Initiative WA

The Perth Hebrew Congregation and Jewish Historical and Genealogical Society of Western Australia (JHGS-WA) held a service to rededicate the Jewish Memorial Cemetery at East Perth Cemeteries.

The death certificate of Mortiz Wertheimer (who died in Perth in 1895) could not be located by his descendants. Rose Raymen, a voluntary genealogical researcher and member of the JHGS-WA took up the challenge and was successful. The Wertheimer family was keen to add Moritz’s first name to the plaque at the Jewish Memorial Cemetery listing the names of all the deceased but that simply had him listed as ‘WERTHEIMER, July 1895.’ A new plaque was made and installed by the National Trust and other names uncovered through Rose’s research were also included.

On 10 December 2017 the Perth Hebrew Congregation and Jewish Historical and Genealogical Society of Western Australia (JHGS-WA) held a service to rededicate the Jewish Memorial Cemetery at East Perth Cemeteries. Rabbi Dovid Freilich OAM recited the re-consecration psalms and memorial prayer in Hebrew and English. He then read out the names on the plaque – Moritz Wertheimer, Lina Mandelstam, the still born baby of Nahum and Gertrude Ferstat, Woolf Zukerman and others who were among the 32 Jews buried in the cemetery.
