Drs James McDonald and Dawn Casey will talk about the early interaction of the Aboriginal communities with Europeans in the Queanbeyan / Canberra district. These two talks will complement each other in unearthing confronting information about the Frontier Wars. Dr James McDonald will focus on the ‘Aboriginal voice’ in the local source material and, in particular, the significance of the testimony of Nellie Hamilton. which he will argue is of national importance.
The National Museum of Australia, where Dr Dawn Casey was the founding Director, and other institutions have a key role in presenting a more truthful representation of Australian history.
Dawn Casey is a Tagalaka Traditional Owner from North Queensland has been awarded three honorary doctorates. In 2023, the first two volumes of James McDonald’s five-volume history of Canberra were released. His family traces its arrival to the district back to John Casey at Canberra station in 1826. The presentation focuses on volume 1 ‘Canberra – from antiquity to the Invasion’.
