Z Ward: Behind the walls
For almost 90 years Glenside’s Z Ward was home to South Australia’s “criminally insane”, patients who sat on the overlapping edges of criminality and mental illness. Join us in exploring and preserving this unique treasure with a private tour, that showcases the building in interesting new lights.

The Z Ward Psychology tour, tailored for students, runs for approximate 90 minutes and it entails an introductory talk, a guided tour, 10 minutes for independent explorations, during that time the tour guide will be happy to answer questions. The tour looks at attitudes held about mental health in the 19th century and how they had altered by the time Z Ward closed in the 1970’s.
