For almost 90 years Glenside’s Z Ward was home to South Australia’s “criminally insane”, patients who sat on the overlapping edges of criminality and mental illness. Join us in exploring and preserving this unique treasure with a private tour, that showcases the building in interesting new lights.

Designed specifically for psychology students, this educational tour of Z Ward at Glenside Hospital explores the history of mental health care in South Australia. The experience includes an introductory presentation, a guided tour of the historic ward, and time for independent exploration, with opportunities to ask questions throughout.
Students will gain insight into 19th-century attitudes towards mental illness and treatment, and examine how approaches to mental health evolved up to the ward’s closure in the 1970s. Designed by renowned landscape designer Elsie Cornish, the garden showcases her distinctive use of colour, structure, and seasonal planting, creating a landscape of beauty throughout the year.
Led by knowledgeable guides, this garden tour explores the history and evolution of the estate, from its origins as the home of prominent South Australian merchant Sir Samuel Davenport through to its preservation by the National Trust. Visitors will discover how the property’s gardens have changed over time, learn about significant plantings and landscape features, and gain an appreciation for the role that gardens played in the social and domestic life of Adelaide’s early settlers.
