Mount Leura & Mount Sugarloaf are part of a large volcanic complex which was formed more than 20,000 years ago by a series of major volcanic eruptions. The area was purchased by the National Trust in 1970s to prevent quarrying in the reserve and is cared for today by a dedicated volunteer management team.
