The Library and the Pub
In 1878 Robert Bain, owner of the Border Hotel, gave land on a 500-year lease for a Mechanics Institute and Library. The connection between the library and the pub continues. The Berwick Mechanics Institute & Free Library still operates a free lending library on this land, close to the Berwick Inn.
The library’s Heritage Collection includes the Bain Family Bible and other early records. This event provides an opportunity to see these records and hear more about the Bain family. There is also a copy of the 500-year lease on display.
