PAST EVENT

The Block

The Block-At the edge of Queanbeyan's CBD sits grand homes each with their own stories of the town's past. The Block is bounded by Lowe, Isabella, Crawford and Rutledge Streets. The walking tour looks at the contributions made by the families of the Block to Queanbeyan's European history.

The Block was home to some of Queanbeyan’s most significant people including the Founder of Canberra, entrepreneurs and businesspeople who drove the development of Queanbeyan and Canberra plus odd and eccentric characters of the town. There are historic buildings including Benedict House, Queanbeyan’s first public school, the first pre-school and St. Stephens built in the 1870’s. The walking tour is a glimpse into the symbiotic relationship of Queanbeyan and the Federal capital. Poets, journalists, politicians, postmen and brewers all played a role as did the businesspeople who contributed to the growth of both towns.
