Portland Blues

Join tour guide Gordon Stokes for a walking tour of a selection of central Portland's bluestone structures, focusing on construction methods used by 19 Century stone cutters and masons and an understanding of conservation methods required to maintain the bluestone structures for future generations.

Visitors will see the great variation in construction methods, the use of variations in stone quality and size, and the range of conservation and repair practices used; from poor quality to highly skilled. Visitors will be pleasantly surprised by the number of stone walls generally hidden from view and the remaining stone gutters formed from stone rubble to highly refined.

The tour guide will interpret for the benefit of visitors stone residences, commercial premises, stone walls and gutters located in inner Portland.
