Heritage walk of Newport Lakes
Newport Lakes is celebrating 40 years since it was reclaimed and rehabilitated as a stunning park and wetlands. Join author Dominique Hes and colleagues for a guided walk around the Lakes with before and after photos and stories.
Newport Lakes was reclaimed and rehabilitated in 1984 by two women who saw a vision of what it could be. It had been a quarry since 1868 and was earmarked to become a tip. It was influenced by a vision from Butchart Gardens, Canada in 1978. The 90-minute guided walk will walk past eight points of interest with photos and stories of what was there from pre-colonial days to today. The tour will pay respect to the Yalukit Willam who took care of this land for millennia; with stories through the early colonial times along with tales of convicts to contemporary times. The walk and talk will weave through relevant theories of the need for nature in people’s lives, placemaking and regenerative development.
