The Heritage Skills Association presents displays and talks at the Old Observatory, home of the National Trust of Western Australia. Join us in what is our first WA Heritage Skills Showcase.
Hear about projects and challenges in Heritage Skills throughout the day.
In the Annexe building:
10 am – 11.00 am
Listen to a talk by Dr. Ingrid van Bremen on students’ work in conservation and architecture research. Dr. van Bremen will speak about her renowned books on the history of Western Australian building construction. A casual conversation with Dr van Bremen follows.
1.00 pm – 3.00 pm
Join in on an afternoon panel discussion around the theme of heritage skills professions given by Heritage Engineer Martin Silk, Conservation Architect Flavia Kiperman, ICOMOS Young Emerging Professional Alana Jennings and Curtin University Professor Kevin Mitcham. The speakers will focus on heritage skills, with examples of a project or projects and challenges. Catch up after for a casual mix and mingle with the panel.

View a display by the Curtin University Interior Architecture Design students as they showcase how to integrate heritage preservation and conservation, into a refurbishment or adaptive reuse. See special interest displays from North Metropolitan TAFE – Balga, Element, Urbis, ICOMOS and the National Trust of Western Australia.
12.00 pm – 1.00 pm
Go on a walking tour through the Old Observatory with Louise Young, Conservation Project Officer of the National Trust. Meeting point: the circular sign on the grass at the front of the building.
