Central Goldfields Art Gallery

Explore and admire the historic Old Fire Station which is now home to Central Goldfields Art Gallery, with its distinctive National Trust classified bell tower & many other original features. Also view our current & diverse exhibitions: see centragoldfieldsartgallery.com.au for exhibition details.

Central Goldfields Art Gallery has been situated in an historic fire station since 1996, it was built in 1861 within the civic and historic precinct around McLandress Square, Maryborough. In 1907 an addition was added. In 1887 a new fire tower was built after the Maryborough Town Hall was constructed in 1887 which muffled the sound of the original bell on the original, lower fire tower. The Maryborough Country Fire Authority handed back the old fire station to what was then called Maryborough City Council in 1982 when it moved to its current location on Napier Street, Maryborough.

The Gallery’s main exhibition space, the ‘Engine Room’ is where the fire engines were formally housed. The whole gallery recently underwent a major redevelopment reopening in March 2023. The Architects Nervegna Reed Architecture & the builders Searle Bros have both won awards for their work on the project & the Gallery was also highly commended at the Victorian Museums & Galleries Awards in 2023.

The Gallery welcomes groups for guided tours and talks. These sessions may be offered outside of opening hours if required. For more information please contact the Gallery on 03 5461 6600 or cgsc.art@cgoldshire.vic.gov.au. The Gallery is only a short walk to nearby cafes and restaurants.
