Unearthed – Forgotten People and Places

Forgotten people and places: There are stories of Queanbeyn's past and present with many lost over time. The Unearthed Heritage walk is aimed at revealing the lesser-known stories of the town including Irishtown, boom and mills, weir vision, bridging the gap, Lazarus and growing of cabbages.

A walk along the Queanbeyan River is not just a good walk or run it is a trip back in time when the court house and prison was described as a “chookhouse”, flour mills lined the river bank, and market gardens flanked both sides before high rises grew out of the ground. The best pubs in town had views over the water and mischevious men swam in the nude. People drowned and others were murdered. Threaded through the stories are names such as Faunce, Byrne, Wright, Callaghan and Lazarus.
