Tours of Historic St Stephen’s Anglican Newtown

Now is your chance to explore a gothic revival masterpiece in the heart of Sydney. St Stephen's Anglican, Newtown, are offering tours that tell some of the many fascinating stories from the history of this church building and the graveyard it sits in.

Built in 1874, this church is one of Australia’s finest works by Edmund Blacket. A late Victorian gothic revival masterpiece set in a graveyard that goes back to the early days of Sydney’s European expansion, this is not an event to be missed by those interested in Australian history.

Come hear the story of how a church ended up in Camperdown Cemetery, and all the stories that have happened since. We’ll talk about why the concept of a ‘free pew’ was so radical in the 19th Century, and see the world class, still working organ from the 1870s! We’ll follow the story through the heartbreak of world wars and economic depressions, and to the revival of the church in the 21st Century.
