Old Government Cottage and Garden Open Day
Old Government Cottage is a fine example of early domestic Australian architecture. The Cottage houses an exhibition on the development of Bathurst, artworks and a display of local domestic objects. The garden contains heritage plants, farm equipment and an original baker's oven.
When Old Government Cottage was originally set up as a museum in 1965 it was thought to have been built in 1817 as the residence of the Commandant of the Bathurst Settlement. Subsequent research has established that this was not the case, and it is now thought to have been built around 1850 by Miss Anne Falloon, proprietress of a school for young ladies. An interpretive display of Bathurst’s early history has been set up withing the building focusing on the settlement timeline.
