There aren't many better places to gain an insight into the heritage of a community than to visit a local cemetery.

The Woronora Memorial Park in Sutherland, Sydney, held an open day on Saturday, 22 April as part of the Australian Heritage Festival to share the memorials and history of the park.

The first interment was in 1895 for 19 year old Helen Willow from Kogarah. Some headstones predate the opening of the park. In 1902 the Devonshire Street Cemetery was closed to make way for Central Railway Station and some of the graves were relocated to Woronora.

More than 1500 people attended the open day to learn more about the Park and see displays from local funeral directors, gravedigger equipment and a ‘backstage’ look at how the crematorium works. There was also Cobb & Co coach rides, music and food.
