National Trust Conservation Appeals – Martin Davies Memorial Scholarship
The University of Tasmania is moving to activate the National Trust Martin Davies Memorial Scholarship.
Martin Davies (1958-1995) was among the first undergraduates to study historical archaeology at the University of Sydney in 1976. He was employed as an archaeologist by the Tasmanian Parks & Wildlife Service and became part of Brian Egloff’s, pioneering conservation team at Port Arthur in 1983. His work there was influential far beyond the significance of that size, as he instituted the field schools that helped train the next generation of historical archaeologists. Around the country, Martin was influential in the conservation and interpretation of sites such as Highfield House, Eaglehawk Neck Military Barracks and Maria Island.
He played the lead role in the fight to establish the conservation of the Tasmanian environment as a priority for the Government and the community. He brought both passion and rigour to saving, analysing, conserving and interpreting the heritage of Tasmania. He was the first archaeologist to visit Macquarie Island. He died in Davis Station on 25 November 1995 while climbing in the Vestfold Hills.
The Martin Davies Memorial Scholarship is available to students studying conservation in the context of degree subjects such as architecture. For further information, please contact us at admin@nationaltrusttas.org.au
