Launceston Synagogue secures Australian Government’s Advanced Security grant

National Trust Tasmania and Rabbi Joseph Gutnick are co-Trustees for the Launceston Synagogue. The 1846 Egypto-Revival Synagogue is an architectural prodigy, testament to Australian multiculturalism and enduring place of worship.

Rabbi Gutnick has recently funded works to the Synagogue including external painting, repaving the forecourt and interpretative signage. These works are part of a longer-term program to extend the Synagogue with an area for kiddish – food, drink, meetings and conversation. Making the historic synagogue more of a community centre will contribute to its ongoing sustainability. The Trust thanks Rabbi Gutnick for his support of our living cultural heritage. The Trust would also like to thank Elizabeth Ferrara, for her project management of the works.

National Trust Tasmania has been working with Felix Goldschmeid of the Launceston Hebrew Congregation and Gayle Plunkett on security upgrades for the Launceston Synagogue. We are happy to announce our successful application to the Australian Government’s Jewish Facilities in Australia Advanced Security Program managed by the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ). Asher Port from Community Security Group NSW (CSG) will undertake this work in July 2024.
