NT Significant Tree Register

We need a volunteer to check what trees have been removed, and then the website can be updated. (See details below)

The picture is of a raintree (Samanea saaman) planted in 1962 by Mrs Archer, the wife of the Administrator, who planted the trees in front of the Parap shops, on behalf of the Professional Women’s Club. There are now 4 remaining (see photo) out of the 5 trees in the NT Significant Tree Register. The fifth one was damaged in the last cyclone, and has just been removed.

The NT Register of Significant Trees was created in 1982 during the Australian Year of the Tree to highlight the importance of protecting trees as part of the Northern Territory’s natural and cultural heritage.

Originally developed by the National Trust NT in collaboration with Greening Australia NT,  Dr Bill Low is at present hosting and managing this website for the Land for Wildlife Central Australia.

Many of the significant trees around Darwin have gone due to cyclones and developments over the years. We need a volunteer to check what trees have been removed, and then the site can be updated. The website can be used to find the tree on Google Earth, and is easy to use. The pictures are also out of date, and to make the website look better, as well as accurate, the pictures need to be updated.

Darwin city council recently removed this raintree after Cyclone Fina. The second photo shows its nameplate.
