Applications for the Paul William Butler Bequest are now open.

The National Trust of Australia (NSW) administers the Paul William Butler Bequest which has the objective of promoting pre-1931 vintage and veteran cars. Veteran cars must be built before the end of 1918 and vintage cars between 1919 and 1930.

Applications are currently open for the calendar year 2027 but in exceptional circumstances applications for the remainder of 2026 and post 2027 will be considered.

Applications close Monday 31 August 2026.

Application Requirements

Applicants are required to submit an online PDF application (Max 10MB file) of at least one A4 page, but no more than four A4 pages, via the portal below.

Applications must be presented on the registered organisation’s official letterhead.

Applications must include the following:

  1. Brief outline of project and funding amount (limited to a discretionary maximum of up to $10,000).
  2. How your project relates to one or more of the purposes of the grant:
    • The public exhibition of vintage and veteran cars in New South Wales;
    • The restoration and preservation of vintage and veteran cars for the purpose of public exhibition in New South Wales;
    • Education or research into vintage and veteran cars in New South Wales.
  3. Whether your activity involves historic buildings or properties cared for by the National Trust (NSW)
  4. Opportunities to link to the National Trust e.g. promotion of Trust properties or membership
  5. How will you publicly acknowledge the support of the National Trust, should your application be successful.
  6. Itemised budget table. Please include all estimated income and expenses for this activity.

Terms of Service(Required)

GRANT PURPOSE
The grant provides funding to registered organisations for the following purposes:
• The public exhibition of vintage and veteran cars in New South Wales;
• The restoration and preservation of vintage and veteran cars for the purpose of public exhibition in New South Wales;
• Education or research into vintage and veteran cars in New South Wales.

ELIGIBILITY
1. Funds may only be granted to registered organisations
2. All applications must align to one or more of the purposes of the grant, listed above
3. Interstate applicants may apply, if the grant funded activity is located in, or focused on, New South Wales
4. Eligible applications:
a) Majority of vehicles involved – i.e. more than 50% – must be classed as Vintage or Veteran OR
b) Grant support to be based on the percentage of Vintage or Veteran vehicles involved. E.g. if 10% of vehicles meet the criteria, funding is to be allocated to this portion only, as a percentage of overall costs.

GRANT FUNDING
Grants are limited to a discretionary maximum of up to $10,000. The Grant Selection Committee may consider applications beyond the maximum application amount, however, guidance should first be sought from the National Trust, prior to submitting such an application.

APPLICATIONS
Applications must be presented on the registered organisation's official letterhead. All applications must respond to the submission inclusion requirements listed above.

SELECTION PROCESS
The Selection Committee will consider applications on their merit, having regard to the purposes of the grant as defined in the Bequest.

SELECTION OUTCOME
In October, every applicant will be notified of the decision by the Selection Committee for their application.

BRAND AND PROMOTION
The Trust is committed to supporting the promotion of the Butler Bequest Grant, and the activities it supports, through our social media and online channels. Promotional activity and planning in collaboration with the Trust will be managed in direct liaison with the Director, Marketing and Communications. The Trust will also provide a brand pack including the logo for print and electronic use; however all promotional applications of the brand must be pre-approved by the Trust. The Trust reserves the right to request changes to promotional material where the brand has not been applied appropriately and in accordance with our guidelines.

INVOICING AND ACQUITTAL
Successful applicants must submit a formal invoice for the amount of the approved grant. This will be paid within 30 days. Successful applicants will be required to submit an acquittal report on the outcomes, including itemised income and expenditure, within 30 days from the completion of the grant funded activity.
