We Built This City Exhibition

To celebrate the We Built this City heritage interpretation project, the community can now view all project material alongside Council’s heritage collections.

The project celebrates the stories of some of Greater Dandenong’s favourite heritage places as chosen by our community. Our municipality is not widely acknowledged for its historic architecture, however there is a wide range of architectural periods present, from Victorian-era through to late 20th century and contemporary. There are also fascinating stories behind the sites and the people connected with them – including how different waves of migration, particularly post-war migrants, have shaped the places we enjoy today.

Come and see stories for each place come to life through short videos, historic objects, photographs and oral histories from Council and local historical society collections. Visitors are encouraged to share their recollections of sites through our Community Heritage Memory Book and take home a postcard of their favourite site.
