Walking on Country – Aboriginal and early colonial Benalla.

A guided walking tour of key sites on the Broken River that reveal the history of Aboriginal society and the period of armed conflict following colonisation.

The Broken River in Benalla has a series of significant sites associated with tens of thousands of years of Aboriginal society, and incidents of armed conflict and massacres that followed colonisation.

Join a two hour guided walk through the local environs of Benalla to learn about and reflect on this shared history.

The walk will be led by local historian and author Hamish McPherson, with the support of Yorta Yorta community members, based on their research, knowledge and commitment to truth telling.

The walk will follow streets and formed paths through bushland and parks. It is an easy to moderate walk with frequent rest stops. People should wear walking shoes, hat and bring a water bottle.
