Unearthed then and now
Come and have a look at 150 years of architectural history. The church was designed by the diocesan Architect Terry Peale, and believed to be the smallest church he ever designed
In the 1850’s St John’s original church building was started and concluded in about 3 years.
It was discovered during recent renovations that what was thought to be made of bluestone was in fact only the corners and the walls are made of local ironstone. Over the years the church had deteriorated to the point that the original floor had dropped, due to the foundations being eroded away as they were made of rubble.
Repair work has now been completed and the church is now a thing of beauty as it was 150 years ago.
