Try Trugo at magnificent Rippon Lea Estate

Try Victoria's living sporting heritage on the lawns of Ripponlea Estate - watch a demonstration and then have a go at our quirky sport - Trugo.

Pick up your wooden mallet, turn your back and hit a rubber ring between your legs through goals 27 metres away. The rules are the same as for the railway workers who created the sport around 100 years ago in Melbourne’s West- score the most goals and your team wins. Trugo is part of Victoria’s living, sporting heritage.

Some say it is like a cross between croquet, wood chopping, lawn bowls and Australian Rules football.

Croquet – because of the wooden mallet used.
Wood chopping – because of the hitting action.
Lawn bowls – because it is played on a grass green.
AFL football – because you hit the rubber ring through goal posts.

Nine teams in Melbourne are still playing the game the workers created and you can experience this fun and historic game in the gorgeous grounds of Ripponlea Estate.

Watch us play and have a go – a “true-go”.
