Trugo – a Unique Victorian Sport

Pick up your wooden mallet, turn your back and hit a rubber ring between your legs through goals 27 metres away. The rules are the same as for the railway workers who created the sport 100 years ago - score the most goals and your team wins. Be part of Victoria’s living, sporting heritage.

Try a unique Century-old sport invented by workers in the Newport Railyards in Melbourne’s West. They used their mallets to hit rubber rings from the train buffers the length of a carriage. Some say it is like a cross between croquet, wood chopping, lawn bowls and Australian Rules football.

  • Croquet – because of the wooden mallet used.
  • Wood chopping – because of the hitting action.
  • Lawn bowls – because it is played on a grass green.
  • AFL football – because you hit the rubber ring through goal posts.

Nine teams in Melbourne are still playing the game the workers created and you can become of this fun and historic game.

We will provide the equipment for you to have a go at Trugo at our historic Ascot Vale Court, across the Maribyrnong from the Anglers Tavern (stop 41 on the 57 tram).

If you love it, you could join one of the nine Melbourne Trugo Clubs or you might just want to give it a “True-go”.
