Saved from Dying – Best survival comes from our 900-year history
The talk will tell how world's best survival rate has developed from the our 900-year history of medical care illustrated in the museum collection. The talk will be followed by a guided tour of the museum which is open free of charge on Sundays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm.
The slideshow talk will start by showing how world’s best survival rate from cardiac arrest has been achieved in Melbourne by application of first aid practices progressively upgraded during the 140 years that St John has been in Victoria. This will be followed by an account of the 900-year history of the Order of St John, beginning at the time of the Crusades at a hospital in Jerusalem caring for pilgrims to the Holy Land. Subsequent centuries of conflict between Christians and Muslims are illustrated by other exhibits around the museum, including accounts of the occupation of Rhodes and Malta and the dissolution of the monasteries in England.
A guided tour of the museum will highlight several stories, including how Melbourne’s ambulance service developed from a horse-drawn carriage to today’s modern fleet.
