Re-Thinking Heritage – Walking Tour and Discussion

Join urban historian, Dr James Lesh, and architects Sonia Sarangi and Michael Smith, on a walking tour, discussing the opportunities of Re-thinking Melbourne's heritage.

In the context of the housing crisis and ongoing environmental crisis, are common heritage practices up to scratch? Or do they need a rethink?

For a several decades heritage conservation has enjoyed a strong social license to conserve old building fabric. Frequently, conserving old fabric has been privileged over sustaining cultural significance, compromising the ongoing, viable, and safe use of heritage places, and thus diminishing the potentially positive contribution of conservation to cities and communities.

By rethinking our approach to heritage, we can we refresh the social license that is required for heritage policy to be accepted and embraced by our community.

Join us on a walking tour in one of Melbourne’s inner suburbs where we will discuss the opportunities that progressive heritage policies could deliver for our city.
