QVWC Feminist Walking Tour
Discover the lost stories of the women that made Melbourne! Guided by QVWC's Feminist Historian, Barbara Wheeler, our 2.5 hour tour will cover 3 city sites including Victoria Trades Hall Council, St David's Hall at the Welsh Church and the QVWC where tour participants can enjoy a light lunch.
This uniquely Melbourne walking tour starts at the Victorian Trades Hall Council at 54 Victoria Street at the statue of Zelda D’Aprano where we learn about Helen Robertson’s success at establishing Australia’s first female trade union in the 1880’s and Zelda’s fight for equal pay in the 1960’s. The tour then moves to the Welsh Church at 380 La Trobe Street and St David’s Hall, the site of Melbourne’s first outpatient clinic for women established in 1895 by Dr Constance Stone, Australia’s first registered medical practitioner. The tour concludes at the Queen Victoria Women’s Centre at 210 Lonsdale Street, the former QV Hospital. Here we learn more about Dr Stone’s determination to practice medicine and the establishment of Australia’s first, and the world’s third hospital for women and children. At the QVWC, participants will enjoy a light lunch and there will be an opportunity for Q&A. The tour accommodates up to 20 participants and tickets are $30.
