McCrae Homestead Open Day

McCrae Homestead is one of Victoria's oldest homesteads and is a physical reminder of the early pioneering life.

McCrae Homestead is one of Victoria’s oldest homesteads, providing a physical reminder of the early pioneering life. Built in 1844 by Andrew and Georgiana McCrae, the homestead is a rare example of drop slab construction. Georgiana’s great-great-great grandson sold it to the National Trust in 1970.

The Homestead was built on Bunurong Country on a large lease within the Arthur’s Seat Run, comprising 33 square miles (8,296ha). The McCrae family were one of the first six pioneer families to establish properties on the Mornington Peninsula. The building was designed by Georgiana, the illegitimate daughter of the 5th Duke of Gordon, a talented artist and dedicated diarist.  During their time at the property, Georgiana’s diaries suggest that the McCrae family has a mutually respectful relationship with local Bunurong families, and this relationship is explored in the Visitor’s Centre at the Homestead.

After the McCrae’s moved away, the Burrells, a dedicated farming family, lived at the homestead from 1851 to 1926. During this time they made significant contributions to the broader Mornington Peninsula region.

The Visitor’s Centre, located on the property, features galleries which showcase the McCrae’s art, memorabilia and the photography, artefacts and objects from the Burrell-Twycross family.

Open every Sunday, last tour runs at 3:00pm.
