Looking at Architecture: Historic Maitland and District Country Weekend
Join a special self-drive tour of charming heritage homes and gardens throughout the Lower Hunter Maitland district, an area rich in history and awe-inspiring landscapes, just waiting to be explored.
The gateway to the Lower Hunter is dominated by the city of Maitland and surrounding suburbs, surrounded by rich floodplains where lush lucerne and a variety of vegetable crops are produced. Originally inhabited by the Wonnarua People since the time of European settlement, the area has a history of boom and bust and at one time Maitland was the second biggest town in New South Wales.
An easy two-hour drive from Sydney and about 30 minutes from Newcastle, the area is rich in history with diverse architecture and beautiful private gardens.
Over two days, guests will have the opportunity to explore significant historic homes and gardens dating from the 1830s to the early 1900s.
On Friday, Grossmann House will host a reception from 6pm, with all funds going to this important National Trust property*
On Saturday, the Paterson CWA will host a light lunch in the grounds of Bolwarra House*
