Finding a Sporting Star and Other Stories

Unearthed from the garage are the achievements of an Australian sporting star. On display at the Apollo Bay Museum is a collection of the medals, cups, and uniforms and highlights from the life ofa young man who represented Australia at Olympic, Commonwealth and other International diving events.

We are a small town on the South-West Coast of Victoria with lots of local stories to tell. Visit the Apollo Bay Museum where you will see a special exhibition devoted to Don Wagstaff a local sporting hero from the past now living in our town. A special display is devoted to Don’s achievements.

A visit to the museum housed in the Cable Station, which provide the first telephone link between Tasmania and mainland Australia. See the collection of photographs depicting the laying of the cable and some of the equipment used to keep the line in use.

Your visit will bring you the stories of the shipwrecks from the notorious “eye of the needle” – that final hazardous part of the journey between Cape Otway and King Island. A disaster for many that sailed from England to Australia in the early 1840s and 50’s.

Learn about how the town of Apollo Bay started and changed over the years from a timber town to a tourist town.
